Do We All Have Humble Beginnings?
(Published By Jill Klunk December 22, 2015 Category: Storytelling
I was reading an article the other day by Nick Nanton, Celebrity Branding Agency, “I Want to Move from Essential Thinking to Effortless Implementation.” In this article he brought up some very interesting points that I would like to share with you.
What do Apple, Nike, Disney, Mattel and Harley Davidson all have in Common?
They all started in a garage.
Like many of us, who are entrepreneurs, we all may have started from humble beginnings, like in a garage, basement or a spare room in our homes.
And all of us should have the following in place to be successful:
· A plan
· Systems — processes and
· Mindset
I remember my Dad asking me one day “Jill, what do you want to do when you grow up?” My response was, I want to be a Physical Education teacher. Why, he asked? Because I loved sports and working with children.
Well, as time went on I realized that was not in the cards for me. So I moved on and did the 9 to 5 thing for years, never losing the craving to be my own boss and own a small home-based business.
So I started researching what was available and how it might apply to me. I have always had this burning desire and it wasn’t until late 2004 when I actually did something about it.
I did the required training classes and received my real estate license. Little did know then that it was up to me to find a company that I wanted to work for as an independent agent. So, I went to work for the first company I spoke with in Myrtle Beach, SC.
At that time, I knew very little about marketing myself, planning, getting listings and buyers or where I would start.
I assumed my Broker would do that for me. NOT!
His response was “now that you have your license go buy and sell properties.”
What an eye opener that was.
So, here I was again, researching, reading and studying, how to build my business and clientele.
Slowly but surely I started getting leads from my Broker and one thing led to another. Needless to say I spent a lot of money and had some sleepless nights building my business.
Fast forward, to 2008 when I took a hard look at where I was and what got me there.
With the Housing Bust I almost called it quits. But with a plan, some systems and tenacity I persevered.
I went back to the basics of building my business, looking at my past clients, building an avatar around the Senior demographic and marketing to them and only them.
Since that time they have grown to know, like and trust me and my business grew accordingly.
Life, in general, is an educational experience. How one handles these experiences makes for a better person.
As we learn, we share experiences with our colleagues and clients. Now, I am l sharing stories of my life and experiences through my blog “Own Your Own Beach.” My Blog is my island and the Internet is my voice, where I share and build my business.
Storytelling has been around since beginning of time.
We find in the Bible where Jesus and his disciples shared their stories and just like them, through time we all have had stories to share.
Good examples of story tellers are musicians, singers and songwriters.
They create and explore relationships talking about love, their lives, and their relationships all in a very short period of time. Usually 4 to 5 minutes long.
They know the power of storytelling and who is their audience.
This is what every business owner MUST harness, in order to be successful.
As business owner’s we know how our clients feel, we know their pain and share with them our content (stories) on how we’ve solved similar issues.
Through time, we share this information with them via social media and they in turn get to know, like and trust us.
It is my goal to grow my business with something that already exists: the Internet, search engines and The Medium Platform.
Why have I chosen this as my media? Because, it is the way times are moving. This is where people go to get answers and information, i.e. cell phones, computers, the Internet, Instagram, Facebook, to name a few.
As a result, I need to meet my clients and customers in the manner they are working, socializing and looking for answers.
Initially, I fought this but realized I needed to change my mindset; systems and processes to meet my clients needs and if I didn’t, someone else would.
I felt their pain and recognized I needed to take immediate action.
The group I am working with today, to help me grow and learn new methods of marketing through content and network marketing are phenomenal.
The hands on training that I am getting has created an experience far beyond my imagination and I will cherish it for a lifetime.
Yes, this old dog is learning new tricks and ways to market herself and business.
I gambled, took a risk because I believed in myself and knew it was the right decision for me.

PS. I don’t know about you, but if the thought of working two jobs in your golden years sounds ridiculous to you as well, you definitely want to consider starting your own side business.
