Do You Focus on Your Needs or the Needs of Others?

I recently read an article by Mark Albion that strung a chord with me. He states:

Do you try to understand others before trying to have them understand you? This question is essential to becoming an effective leader.”

Too often we fail to see what impact our relationships with others have on how we build our businesses and life. I am a firm believer in helping as many people in life as I can and I will reap tenfold from it. It’s not about me; it’s about the relationships we build by helping others.

Some people call this the law of reciprocity but I feel it comes from the way in which we were raised and our family values.

Abigail Van Buren, Dear Abby columnist says it best “There are two kinds of people in the world — those who walk into a room and say “Here I am’ and those who say ‘There you are”.

Another way of looking at it is: Do YOU focus on your needs or the needs on others?

Myself, I focus on others needs first because WHEN I provide value to them they will be grateful to me and refer others.

This my friend, is called “power of attraction.”

You can only be as successful as those you help. Success is not about you; you are only the facilitator. You need to help others reach their dreams for you to be successful. You need to feel their pain and provide the solution.

When I was growing up my parents emphasized that we should respect our elders and raise our hand to answer questions. While leadership today is about building an organization and knowing how to help others raise their hands and answer questions.

This is what distinguishes us as we build our organizations and have the willingness to help others achieve their dreams. We have invested our time, we listen and we teach others to be able to have a better lifestyle. We should adjust our methods of communication to the individual and motive each person accordingly.

We get so busy with our stuff; it’s easy to forget others’ needs, and our affect on them.

Great entrepreneurs, great leaders don’t forget.
