If Only Syndrome … Are You Suffering From It?

I recently read an article by Frank Vandersloot, CEO of Melaleuca, where he talks about taking responsibility for our actions and changes in our lives and that if we continue to do the same thing day in and day out we will never grow or reach our goals.

Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself.” ~ Leo Tolstoy

When we look at our success or failure we have a tendency to look for blame rather than looking at ourselves. Thus, the “If Only Syndrome.”

· “If only our spouses would be more sensitive to our needs.

· If only our children would follow our rules.

· If only our bosses would be more appreciative of our efforts

· If only our parents would be more proud of us, etc. then we could really accomplish something.

· If only …..”

You can probably add to this list.

Well, I’m here to tell you life doesn’t work that way. If you want something bad enough in life you have to accept the good with the bad.

Unless we take ownership for our good and bad traits nothing will change. Only we, as human being, can motivate ourselves. Any changes that must happen must come from within and we must take responsibility for our actions.

We must choose to take action to improve rather than wait for someone else to do it. Human beings, by nature, do not like to change, they become complacent. In order to reach your goals, we must re-evaluate our lives to determine if this is really the path God wants us on.

I, for one, have looked in the rearview mirror and reflected on what I’ve done with my life. I can honestly say I have made mistakes but, I have also learned from those mistakes.

I have embraced changes, taken action with tremendous results in 2017 and have set large goals for 2018.

We can’t change others but we can change ourselves. I have come to recognize that I am not perfect and will make mistakes but I am making changes for a better life.

Today, is the first day of the next leg on my journey of my life and:

I will persevere …

I will accept change …

I will survive, and

I will ….!

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. ~ Philippians 4:11–12
