Learn From the Masters
I am a firm believer in the “learn from the masters concept.” This is not always the easiest thing for some people to swallow but, they have already as they say, “Been there done that and have the tee-shirts to prove it.”
Excellent examples are through reading stories, ex. the Bible or books. One of my favorite books is “Leadership Promises for Everyday — A Daily Devotional” by John C. Maxwell. In this book Maxwell has provided lessons learned, for every day of the year, from the Bible.
First thing in the morning, after I make coffee and take my girls (Pickels ~ a six year old Golden Lab and Bailey ~ a 2 year old Blue Tick Hound, that we rescued, for our morning walk, I sit down with my cup of coffee and this book. It is great inspiration, improves my mindset for the day and frequently provides me with information for a blog post.
One of my favorite readings is “Buying into the Leader.”
Judges 6:15–16: “So he said to her, “Oh my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manaseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall, defeat the Midianites as one man.”
Many years ago (1971) I started my career in logistics services of which I knew nothing about. My Supervisor became very ill and the Head of Engineering asked me if I would take his place as the Supervisor. I accepted that challenge, with the condition that after three months, if they were pleased with my performance, I would be given his position and paid accordingly.
After three months I was chosen by my piers to be the Leader of this group and went on to build the team to 86 people and four contracts strong.
I broadened my circle by winning the influence of my peers, employees and Contractors as being tenacious, analytical, very goal oriented and never taking NO for answer.
And today, as a Network Marketer I still follow my influencers and have built a small group of people.
The biggest take away from this devotion is “people don’t automatically buy into a good course. People buy into leaders, they learn to know, like and trust; and they buy into their Leader’s vision.”
