Personal Branding — Why Is It So Important?
Wikipedia says Personal branding is essentially the ongoing process of establishing a prescribed image or impression in the mind of others about an individual, group, or organization. Personal branding often involves the application of one’s name to various products.
A day doesn’t go by when I see articles, blog posts, videos, podcasts, etc. on personal branding and its importance. Personal branding has become a common term in business and is spoken throughout the industry.
It wasn’t that long ago that having your name on a business card, associated with who you worked for was adequate. Now days, people do not care who you work for they are more interested in the value YOU bring to the table or relationship.
In today’s market, business is very personal and our Clients and prospects expect to be treated with respect and what value you bring to them.
Why, because they want to work with someone they know, like and can trust. I constantly ask myself “would I want to work with me?” and if so, why.
It is a good idea to remind ourselves and reflect on why we are working so hard to build our personal brand.
I recently read an article by Nick Nanton, of DNA Agency on this very subject and he states there are “three primary benefits for having a powerful personal brand”:
1. Instant credibility: You should not have to convince your client or prospect every time you meet with them your expertise (value).
Building your personal brand correctly you will be seen as the “go to” person. This credibility is built through your website, your staff, your marketing materials … Everything should work together and position you as the expert in your field. This credibility is especially essential when referring or receiving referrals from other professionals.
A strong personal brand makes it clear that you are the go-to expert.
2. Stand out from the crowd: A strong personal brand creates a memorable experience and helps you to stand out in the mind of your audience and everyone you encounter.
Top-of-mind awareness is invaluable and will result in more referrals and loyal clients.
3. Command a premium price. People will pay more for receiving entrepreneurial advice from an expert than from you if you’re a relative.
Your personal brand creates a perception of you being the expert in your field and puts you in position to command a higher price.
At the end of the day, a strong personal brand will result in more leads, more business, and the ability to charge premium rates. So, invest in your personal brand, and it will come back to you ten-fold.
Invest in yourself.
