It is easy to recognize the benefits of volunteer work to those who take advantage of the services provided. But don’t underestimate the benefits to you personally when you undertake this kind of work.

Volunteering can provide you with a way to meet new people, expand your skills, and boost your self-esteem. You will also gain career experience along the way as well.

Make sure any volunteer work you do is noted on your resume.

If you are unsure of what direction your career is taking, exploring different opportunities through volunteering is a great way to test the waters.

You also are networking as you work. You are meeting people in a field you are interested in, who could become important contacts by either offering you a job or highly recommending you for one.

Where should you volunteer?

Anywhere that you would be interested working!

Follow your interests or career path. Approach an organization or company, and ask if they accept volunteers. Be honest about your ability to commit to a certain amount of time and what types of jobs you would be interested in.

You may be surprised at all of the opportunities out there!

When I first moved to the Myrtle Beach area I didn’t know many people. One Saturday afternoon my Husband I were visiting one of Elks lodge. While we were chatting with some others, who were members at this lodge, the discussion came up about volunteering and one these individuals asked if I would be interested in helping out during Thursday night’s dinner.

That night we served meals to fifty-two people. After that I worked every Thursday evening because it was fun and it was for a good cause. We have been a member of this Lodge for Sixteen years and volunteering is a great way to meet new people.

Studies have found that when we stop thinking about own problems and focus on someone other than ourselves, our stress levels start to decrease, your immune system is strengthened and our sense of life satisfaction increases. Why? Because it interrupts our tension-producing patterns and replaces it with a sense of purpose, positive emotions and high confidence levels.

Here are several reasons to volunteer:

· It’s good for health.

· It creates a positive work ethic, makes you more innovative, creative and gives you a range of useful skills.

· Helps to improve your teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and people skills.

· It gives you the opportunity to improve your community.

· Volunteering where your passion is allows you to give back to a cause you believe in.

· It provides you with the ability to change someone’s life.

· It allows you to meet people from all walks of life; to form real relationships.

· You learn about people’s everyday struggles, their culture and day-to-day lives.

· Use it as a way to get out of your old routine(s) and figure out what your next steps will be.

· Volunteering should not be taken lightly, but with respect, and

· It is fun!

Are you ready to out into and make a difference in someone else’s life? There are hundreds of organizations that need volunteers daily.

Go, and make difference!
